What are the next steps after submitting your application for the HICA NCE?

Booking your examination

You will be sent a link to book your exam date and time close to the Application, payment & transcript deadline of your examination period. This will be sent to the email address you submitted while completing your application.

If you do not receive this email around the deadline, please check your spam/junk folder. If you still have not received the email, please contact exam@echima.ca.

Application approval

Applications are reviewed after the Application, payment & transcript deadline. Approved candidates will receive an email 2-3 days following this deadline to inform them of their approval.

Preparing to write your examination

We have resources to help you prepare for your upcoming national certification examination (NCE). Before accessing the resources listed below, sign in to your CHIMA account.

• Please ensure to review the HICA NCE guide. It is important to read through each section carefully to find more information about the exam. HICA NCE guide
• Before writing your exam, it is vital to prepare your technology and test the proctoring application. Review the NCE online proctoring guidelines for more information.
• The Canadian College of Health Information Management (College) has developed a practice examination to support candidates in their preparation for the Health Information-Certified Associate (HICA) national certification examination (NCE). The practice exam prepares you for the type and style of questions you may be asked. HICA practice exam
• The HICA NCE primer is a resource to study with when preparing to write the HICA NCE. Based on the Health Information Associate Curricular Standards, this primer identifies a few examples of the knowledge content being tested. Accessing resources

The HICA NCE guide and the NCE online proctoring guidelines are public informational pages that can be accessed anytime.

Alternatively, the HICA NCE Primer and the HICA practice exam must first be ‘purchased’ before being accessible.

To begin, please ensure you are logged in to your CHIMA account.

Steps for the HICA NCE practice exam:

1. After completing the checkout process, click on your name in the top-right corner of the website and select My dashboard from the drop-down menu
2. Once on your dashboard, click on the ‘View’ button within the My professional development card
3. Locate and click into the practice quiz
4. Select the ‘Start’ quiz button to begin

Steps to access the HICA NCE primer

1. Access the HICA NCE Primer and click on the ‘Add to cart’ button
2. Complete the checkout process
3. Once complete, navigate to your dashboard
4. Click on the ‘View’ button within the My resources card
5. Locate the primer and click on the titled button under the Download column
