I want to train to become a medical coder. What pathway do I take?

The recognized professional designation for classification and coding specialists (medical coders) in Canada is the CHIM professional designation. Please visit the program directory to browse HIM programs accredited by the Canadian College of Health Information Management.

Graduates of accredited Health Information Management diploma and degree programs that have confirmed their curriculum teaches the Entry-to-Practice (E2P) Medical Coding micro-credential learning outcomes are eligible to write the E2P Medical Coding National Micro-credential Exam (NME) once they  have passed the CHIM National Certification Exam (NCE) and have received their CHIM certification.

The E2P Medical Coding NME tests candidates on practical coding and abstracting scenarios, confirming they understand the application of the ICD-10-CA/CCI and Canadian Coding Standards at the entry-to-practice level.
