{"id":1504523,"date":"2021-02-27T16:51:05","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T20:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/healthinfocanada.ca\/conversation-with-enobong-oladipo\/"},"modified":"2024-08-20T21:18:32","modified_gmt":"2024-08-21T01:18:32","slug":"conversation-with-enobong-oladipo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/healthinfocanada.ca\/?p=1504523","title":{"rendered":"Health information, public health, and COVID-19: A conversation with Enobong Oladipo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.echima.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Enobong-Oladipo-684x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-992183\" width=\"228\" height=\"342\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are few topics as hot-button right now as COVID-19 immunizations, so it\u2019s fitting that our latest member story spotlights Enobong Oladipo, CHIM, a public health administrator in Manitoba who is currently engaged in supporting COVID-19 immunizations clinics for the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enobong came to Canada in 2014 with her husband, who was studying here. Though she had a degree in geology, she was in search of something more versatile\u2014a career that would provide her with purpose and that wouldn\u2019t become monotonous over the long term. When she stumbled across health information, she thought it fit the bill. She loved that there were so many opportunities for health information professionals to work in health care without directly delivering it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Entering the health information profession in the age of COVID<\/strong>-19<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long after graduating from her HIM program, Enobong accepted a role on Manitoba Health\u2019s epidemiology and surveillance team. While she says the job title wasn\u2019t new, she was hired specifically for COVID-19 work as there was a need for HIM professionals at the start of the pandemic. Interestingly, she notes that her education and certification in health information management was a key factor in securing the position. \u201cBecause of the expertise needed to do the job, the hiring manager knew that it was important to have a certified health information professional in this role,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The role provided her with a wealth of experience, including reading through client investigations, extracting relevant information, and entering it into the public health information management system used to manage all public health in the province. She focused on two key questions: How did the individual contract COVID, and where did they come into contact with the virus? The answers were critical for informing public health officials in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Supporting public health administration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June 2020, Enobong moved into the role of public health administrator\u2014a job she says she got mainly because of the skills she gained working in municipal health (particularly her ability to use the public health management system). In \u2018normal\u2019 times, her role involves managing immunization and influenza clinics for kids in grades six and eight. She organizes three per year: spring and fall clinics for routine vaccinations, as well as a fall clinic for the flu shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m the liaison between the school division and public health for my community area,\u201d Enobong explains. \u201cI am responsible for planning and coordinating the immunization campaigns, including getting supplies for the clinics in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COVID-19 immunizations have become an important part of her role. \u201cAll public health administrators for all communities are coming together to support the vaccine rollout and immunization clinics for the entire province,\u201d she says. This support entails creating each day\u2019s event, uploading client information for those being vaccinated that day, managing the event and inventory, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Her way of giving back to the community<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking to her, it\u2019s clear that Enobong loves her job. \u201cIt\u2019s always different tasks. It\u2019s not monotonous, and there\u2019s never any boredom,\u201d she says. \u201cI love that I\u2019m so involved in supporting public health in my area\u2014I see it as my way of giving back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Enobong, COVID-19 has changed more than the focus of her role. \u201cThe most challenging thing for me is the uncertainty due to the pandemic,\u201d she shares. \u201cWhat other changes lay ahead and how might those changes affect my job in the future?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this uncertainty, Enobong is excited about her future in health information.
