CIHI\u2019s Classifications and Terminologies team will present acute care neoplasm case studies. We will walk through the case studies to identify some of the coding challenges. We will then apply the classifications and the coding standards. We will demonstrate how to apply the available resources that support how the cases are correctly classified.<\/p>\n

Oncology Coding- The Backbone of your Centre\u2019s Data<\/strong><\/p>\n

This education session will introduce you to who is an Oncology Coder and Cancer Registrar. We will explore the educational requirements and certifications for an Oncology Coder and Cancer Registrar, what types of facilities we are found in, and the differences between Oncology Coders and Cancer Registrars versus other hospital coders (such as DAD and NACRS coders).<\/div>\n

We will highlight the relationship between Oncology Coders and Cancer Registrars in relation to other stakeholders, our role in reporting, and the implications of oncology coding on funding. We will also touch on the cancer patient\u2019s journey through referral to our coding practices with examples of oncology coding and registry specific resources, effective case management and communication with stakeholders.\u00a0<\/div>\n

Cancer Registry: Oncology Coding Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n

This education session will focus on coding resources used when questions arise during all phases of oncology coding. The coding resources available for solid tumors and hematopoietic neoplasms will both be explored.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coding resources used for a case scenario portraying a patient with a history of a follicular lymphoma who presents with a transformation to a diffuse large b-cell lymphoma will be investigated. Coding resources used for a case\u2002scenario portraying a patient presenting with a stage 1 primary lung adenocarcinoma will be investigated. Coding resources used for a case scenario portraying a patient presenting with a prostate cancer will be investigated.<\/p>\n

Oncology Coding Workshop<\/strong><\/p>\n

This education session will focus on the differences of cancer coding in ER, Inpatient, and oncology clinic visits. We will also have a case highlighting the Cancer Registry process. Example cases will be provided ahead of the education day, so that you are able to review and independently code the cases before attending this session.<\/p>\n

This presentation will walk-through how-to code each of the cases along with a description on how these codes were chosen, focusing on the cancer diagnosis, topography, morphology codes as well as staging. This session will only be an hour, therefore the results and presentation will be available after so that you are able to compare your coding and see how you and your team did.<\/p>\n
