Your Path, Your Story: Career Highlights from Courtney Sabo

The path to a fulfilling career is rarely linear. Winding roads, unexpected detours, and the occasional leap of faith have replaced the traditional blueprint of graduating with a degree, climbing the corporate ladder, and settling into one career until retirement. For many, this journey is not just about following a predetermined path but also about discovering a unique passion shaped by a commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.

Courtney Sabo, an instructor in Health Information Management at Red River College Polytech in Winnipeg, is a fierce advocate for the Health Information Profession (HIP). She continually seeks opportunities to enhance its visibility. Courtney recognizes that although the contributions of HIP professionals often go unnoticed, they are essential for ensuring that data is meticulously collected, managed, and accessible.

Courtney began her career as a dog groomer before transitioning to a role as a veterinary nurse. However, as she faced the daily unpredictability and physical demands of caring for animals, she began to question whether veterinary nursing was a sustainable long-term career for her.

The transition from veterinary medicine to Health Information Management was a logical step for Courtney. With a deep passion for health care and a wealth of transferable skills—such as attention to detail and strong organizational abilities—she had a solid foundation to apply in the Health Information field.

Like many who undergo significant career transitions, Courtney faced the challenges of returning to the role of a student. Despite a steep learning curve, she excelled. Her innate ability to translate complex concepts not only aided her own learning but also helped her classmates. It was during this time that Courtney discovered her passion for teaching and sharing knowledge.

Today, Courtney helps to train the next generation of professionals. As an instructor in the Health Information Management program at Red River College Polytech and a Health Information Specialist with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), she remains dedicated to sharing her experiences and knowledge with others.

Courtney attributes her professional success to the diverse and inspiring people she has encountered throughout her career—those who challenged her to think differently, supported her growth, and fueled her passion for health information management. She notes, “Eileen Oleski is amazing! She taught me how to teach,” while Jeff Nesbitt, CEO and Registrar of CHIMA and CCHIM (Canadian College of Health Information Management), “brought a fresh perspective and vision to the team.”

Courtney acknowledges that “Jeff’s influence and leadership were instrumental in creating positive changes within the profession. He made Health Information exciting and renewed people’s belief in the profession. He is inspiring, and I enjoy listening to him speak!”

Courtney’s parting wisdom: “Work hard, and it will pay off. Never give up.”

Courtney Sabo’s humility and authenticity are refreshing reminders that it is never too late to pursue your passion. True leadership, as she exemplifies, is all about inspiring others while remaining both grounded and fiercely passionate.
