Building Trust: Guiding Principles for the Future of Personal Health Information

Speaker: Michael Harvey, Information and Privacy Commissioner and Registrar of Lobbyists for British Columbia, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia

Commissioner Harvey will talk about his views on the principles that should guide the handling of personal health information today and into the future. His talk will focus on how we need to re-frame the discussion in a number of ways: there is no privacy without access; there is no such thing as the health information system – just the health system; and virtual care is not a substitute for physical care but integral to mainstream health care. In the increasingly data-rich modern health system of tomorrow – and today – the most important element will be trust. Commissioner Harvey will propose how trust – or social licence – for the use of personal health information in clinical settings and for secondary purposes can be achieved and maintained.
