Together with McMaster Continuing Education, this session introduces the foundations of intercultural competency, equity and inclusion for health information managers. Attendees will learn how navigate key concepts, including culture, diversity, ethnocentrism, stereotypes and unconscious bias, and guides students through some intercultural competency models. It emphasizes the attention of self-awareness of one’s cultural worldviews, communication and conflict styles in building one’s intercultural competency. Furthermore, the session connects intercultural competency to equity and inclusion frameworks. Lastly, it links healthcare-related concepts, including health equity and the social determinants of health and highlights the role of data in supporting equity and inclusion.
