[Toronto, Ontario] — [August 10, 2026] — The Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) is pleased to announce the establishment of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Technologies Advisory Group to help guide the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in the health information profession in Canada.
AI is transforming many areas of healthcare, and health information is no exception. From assisted coding solutions to emerging AI applications in the collection, management, analysis, and sharing of health data, these technologies are already changing the work of health information professionals and will continue to do so in the years and decades ahead.
The new Advisory Group will bring together health information professionals and experts from industry and academia to provide strategic guidance on responsible adoption, change management and education so that health information professionals are best positioned to adopt the use of such technologies for improved patient care.
The Advisory Group’s three key objectives are to guide:
- Ethical and responsible AI use in the collection, management, and sharing of health data.
- Education and professional development, including guidelines to support students and current health information professionals in developing the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in an AI-enabled healthcare environment.
- Workforce preparedness and change management, including strategies and resources to support health information professionals and their employers as AI-based solutions are implemented in healthcare settings.
“AI presents both significant opportunities and important considerations for the health information profession,” said Mahmoud Suleiman, CEO & Registrar of CHIMA and the College. “This Advisory Group will help ensure that our profession is prepared to navigate these changes thoughtfully and responsibly, while keeping ethical practice, data stewardship, professional standards, and the needs of the workforce at the forefront.”
The Advisory Group’s anticipated outputs include a position statement and best practice guidelines intended to support the health information community and provide value to industry, health information professionals, government, and academia.
Through this initiative, CHIMA aims to provide leadership and practical guidance as AI continues to reshape healthcare and the health information profession.
