Grammar tip: health information management / HIM

  1. Unless it’s part of a proper name, the term ‘health information management’ does not need to be capitalized.
  2. Once you’ve noted the acronym ‘HIM,’ you no longer need to spell out the full term for the remainder of the document.

Here are a few examples: 

  • The Canadian Health Information Management Association (Association) represents approximately 5,000 health information management (HIM) members across Canada.
  • We are a national association that represents leadership and excellence in health information management.
  • Jane Doe, certified classification and coding specialist with Trillium Hospital, is leading a seminar next month for other professionals in the health information management field.
